The coexistence of astronomy and the island Lošinj begins with the islands long maritime tradition. The knowledge of astronomy was leading our seamen through all the seas of this world. This astronomical tradition is carried till our times through the classes of astronomical navigation at The Nautical School and it had its peak in history at the time when Eugen Jelčić (1881-1895) was the director of The Nautical School and at the time of Spiridion Gopčević (Leo Brenner) and his Observatory “Manora” (1893/1894-1909). The tradition of amateur astronomy on the island is now carried to the future generations by The Astronomical Society “Leo Brenner”.
